Required by the cipher for encrypting and decrypting

Cryptography and Encryption:
Shared key encryption:
Both sender and rcvr of an encrypted msg to have a shared secret – a sequence of characters called a key that the sender uses to encrypt the msg and that the recipient uses to decrypt it
Also known as secret key or symmetric key encryption

Public key encryption:
Uses one key to encrypt a msg, and a second, related key to decrypt the msg
One key is kept private, and the other is shared publicly
A msg encrypted w/ one key can only be decrypted w/ the second key, and vice versa
Also known as asymmetric key encryption

Usefully for authentication of sender
